Rector’s welcome

Welcome to RGSL!

Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) is a centre of excellence for legal education and research. The RGSL offers you a range of academic programmes and courses. With its extensive alumni network, links to global academic partners, law firms and business, international and national institutions, RGSL also offers unique networking and international exchange opportunities.

RGSL’s educational mission encourages both a critical understanding of the law and the nurturing of practical legal skills; integrating theory and practice in the wider service of society.  All RGSL programmes are taught in English by a global faculty of full-time and external staff coming from a variety of academic, jurisdictional and professional backgrounds.

Since its foundation, in 1998, the RGSL has been offering high quality master’s programmes. Today the School offers LLM degrees in International and European Law, Public International Law and Human Rights, European Union Law and Policy, Transborder Commercial Law and Law and Finance. These programmes attract students from Latvia, the Baltic region, the EU and, increasingly, from overseas. The diverse composition of the student body is one of the School’s great assets, contributing to a highly stimulating, international learning environment.

Since 2010, and spurred on by student demand, RGSL has also been offering two undergraduate programmes; an LLB in Law and Diplomacy and an LLB in Law and Business. These programmes have been a tremendous success; extending the experience of studying at the RGSL to a new generation of students.

But RGSL activities go further! Apart from regular public lectures, the RGSL runs a joint PhD programme with the University of Copenhagen, and, in cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an Advanced Programme and, from 2016, an Intensive Programme for international students inter alia from the EU Neighbourhood countries and CIS States. In addition, the School also delivers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. With such a broad range of ongoing activities many alumni find that they never really leave the RGSL!

The School occupies a stunning building in the heart of the Art Nouveau district of Riga which boasts state-of-the-art facilities and hosts an outstanding law library containing one of the best collections in Central and Eastern Europe.

To study in Riga is to study in a magical place: the outrageously beautiful capital of Latvia, the focal point of the Baltic States and a place at the crossroads to the ‘new Europe’. Yet, for all its dynamic modernity, Riga is also a city with a powerful European heritage and a vibrant history.  From its central position in Europe, Riga offers students a uniquely rich and exciting cultural environment and an excellent platform from which to start a global career.

We welcome you to learn more about our activities on these webpages.
