Faculty: Ineta Ziemele is the President of the Constitutional Court of Latvia and Professor at Riga Graduate School of Law. She was a Judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 2005 to 2014, where she was also the President of a Chamber from 2012. Ineta Ziemele has been a member of the Commission of Strategic Analysis under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Latvia and the Committee of Experts on Constitutional Law established by the President. She has been a member of the European Commission E-health expert group and of a group of experts on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Ineta Ziemele founded the Baltic Yearbook of International Law in 2001 and continues to serve as its Editor-in-Chief. In 2016 Ineta Ziemele led the working group which organized the 12th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law. She has published extensively in the areas of international and constitutional law, and human rights. In 2014 the President of Latvia awarded Ineta Ziemele the Order of Three Stars, Class IV. In 2016 Ineta Ziemele received the Award of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia. The course will offer:
- an insider and practitioner’s perspective on how individuals defend their rights in the European Court of Human Rights,
- the most common difficulties for representatives in bringing claims to the Court and the challenges faced by the Court today in Europe,
- detailed explanation of procedure before the Court,
- elaboration on important issues concerning admissibility of claims,
- methodology of the Court in adjudicating cases, i.e., the rules of interpretation and the relevant principles of case law,
- both practical and theoretical insight into the Court's work.
After completing the course participants receive a certificate worth of 2 Latvian credits and 3 ECTS. Who should attend: The course, as part of the masters programme in International and European Law at Riga Graduate School of Law is offered and aimed at professional lawyers (specialist counsel, associates, legal advisors, judges) in Latvia who want to improve their knowledge in human rights litigation and application.
