Faculty: The module is jointly presented by George Ulrich, Professor at RGSL (Denmark) and Arina Melse, Ph.D (Latvia). George is well known to the legal community in Latvia as former RGSL rector (2009-2016). Before joining RGSL George was the Secretary General of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (2003-2009) and where he currently leads a master’s programme in human rights and democratisation. His own research directions include: health and human rights; medical ethics; professional ethics; and EU human rights policy and practice. Arina has recently defended Ph.D in International Public and Human Rights Law at the University of Copenhagen, where she is an affiliated researcher at the Centre of Excellence for International Courts. She is also a graduate from Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (with merits) and Leiden University. About the module: The course provides an overview of international and European human rights regimes, including the main standards and protection mechanisms. The course is structured in two parts. The first part introduces UN human rights system and examines the two Covenants and mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights. It discusses in detail selected economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to health, as well as civil and political rights, such as freedom of expression. The second part provides a comprehensive examination of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its jurisprudence.
