For the first time Riga Graduate School of Law Bachelor students have a chance to take a class in “Art Law.” The goal of the course is to introduce students to the history of art law and to identify legal risks and problems in the field of art. The course is being held by lawyers from “BDO Law” Roland Zigurs and Kristiana Viluma.
The goal of the course is to further student understanding of different types of art, along with the markets and rights involved. Current juridical problems connected with modern art, such as art retention, copyrights, sale of artworks and cases of art forgery, will be discussed during the course.
Vita Liberte, senior partner at “BDO Law”, explains that creation of an “Art Law” course is a great chance for students to learn from experts and to obtain knowledge in a field of rights that has not been widely discussed in Latvia.
RGSL bachelor programme director Inese Druviete is delighted that RGSL has complemented its bachelor program with yet another discipline not well known in Latvia but very important. She believes that knowledge like this will help students to succeed in the job market.
Inese also points out that this course has been developed through RGSL alumni initiative and desire to contribute to the study process. “We are proud that one of the lecturers on this course – Rolands Zigurs – is a RGSL alumnus. He has also studied in the USA, at the prestigious University of South California. The “Art Law” course has been developed with the help of one more RGSL alumna – Madara Mara Irbe.”
Inese also emphasizes the importance of the fact that practicing lawyers are taking part in educating the next generation. “We highly appreciate the involvement of “BDO Law,” because it is extremely important for students to get to know this field of law from professionals who work in Latvia as well as the international arena. Guest lecturers have worked with cases connected with retrieval of artworks as well as acquisitions and disposals. It is important to pass this knowledge on to the next generation of lawyers.”
