STUDY AT RGSL / Law and Diplomacy
This programme directs itself to students intending to work in the Foreign Service of their home countries as well as in international organisations. However, a balanced understanding of policy concerns and conflict resolution, together with legal constraints applying to international relations, will also make candidates attractive for employment in many other fields.
Legal issues take their point of departure in international and European Union institutions and how these are regulated in relation to international relations. To this is added an understanding of major fields of law with which international relations interact, along with fields relevant for diplomatic officers serving on postings abroad. This includes on the one hand specific diplomatic law, and on the other hand international private law as required for advising on conflicts of law in international environments.
Issues relating to diplomacy have a broad reach into history, culture, and political science, with special focus on conflict resolution and negotiation. Courses address these issues from a comprehensive theoretical perspective, but also relate theory to practical application and lessons learned from real world experience. Research tasks and course assignments support this double perspective on subjects.
Language courses focus on English as a world language, with a view to terminology in law, international relations, and business. Students may also follow courses in the traditional diplomatic language of French, as well as German. Other electives include courses in law, international relations, business, culture, and history.
The programme is operated jointly with the University of Latvia.
