On 26 March – 2 April 2015 RGSL team took part in the Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, in Vienna, Austria. Because of the international business community's marked preference for arbitration as the means for resolving trans-border commercial disputes, the Vis Moot was created as a tool for training law students in crucial aspects of the procedure: research, drafting and advocacy. The goals of the Vis Moot are the promotion and study of international commercial arbitration and the training of tomorrow's legal leaders in methods of alternate dispute resolution.
RGSL team members were Ēriks Kristiāns Selga (Law and Business Bachelor programme, Class of 2015), Marta Cera (Law and Business Bachelor programme, Class of 2015), Jūlija Dziguļska (Law and Finance Masters programme, Class of 2015) and Laura Vasermane (International and EU law Professional Masters programme, Class of 2016). Their tutors for the competition was Aravamudhan Ulaganathan Ravindran, RGSL PhD Scholar and Research Fellow, as well as Ugis Zeltins, Senior Associate at Raidla Lejins & Norcous.
Ēriks Kristiāns Selga share his experience at the Moot: "The RGSL Moot Team has recently returned from the Willem C. Vis Moot Competition in Vienna! Six months of preparation led us to a congregation of 300 teams from all around the world. Figurative tears were shed and long nights had. But now that it's over, we wouldn't change the experience for anything.
If there was ever a place to witness how colorful law truly can be, this is it. We often learn about the importance of "interpretation." Yet, books can only do the term so much justice when contrasted against seeing eight teams interpreting the same argument completely differently. Best of all, none of them were explicitly right or wrong.
With this, we would like to invite everyone who wishes to experience law at its rawest and most malleable to participate in the future moots. The experience will be unforgettable. Thank you, and good luck in your future mooting!"
