Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) together with seven Universities from Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia have established an ARTLEX network. The network developed spontaneously as a response to growing demand for proficient legal assistance in a wide spectrum of art-related issues. Besides RGSL, the network currently includes the Universities of Oslo, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Tallinn, Latvia, and Vilnius as well as the International School of Law and Business. The network is interdisciplinary in nature, with a primary focus on law. The aim is to bridge a gap in the current education system, where the legal basics of the functioning of the art market are absent.
As its first event, the network if offering an intensive course “Introduction to Art Law in the Baltic-Nordic Region” for current students on 11-15 July 2016. Three (3) ECTS are allocated for participants.
The course is managed by RGSL and supported by the Nordplus Higher Education Programme.
This complex one-of-a-kind course will offer an insight into fundamental art and cultural property issues. The main target is to provide an overview of the international legal framework, to clarify what is art/artistic craftsmanship and its special legal status, to address questions of copyright and moral rights of artists, to develop intelligence in recovery of stolen and looted art, to provide a notion of contract drafting nuances, and to gain an understanding of underwater archaeology, operation of museums and galleries, legal issues in managing public and private art, regulation of street art, and other issues.
