On 9 November, RGSL lecturer Monica Migliarotti will launch her new book, The Ultimate Guide to Legal English – A Different Approach, at Riga Graduate School of Law.
Monica brings an unusually broad perspective to the subject. An Italian lawyer educated in the Civil Law tradition, she completed her LL.M. at Tulane Law School in the United States and has worked professionally in both the UK and the US.
Her book grew out of that experience. Rather than treating Legal English as a collection of terms to be learned, it looks at what legal concepts actually mean, why they exist, and how they are understood across different legal traditions.
The conversation will be moderated by Aleksandrs Fillers, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of RGSL’s “Business Law and Finance” Master’s Programme.
They will discuss Civil Law and Common Law perspectives, what can be lost when legal concepts cross languages and jurisdictions, and why cases, stories and even popular culture can sometimes teach us more about legal language than definitions alone.
An evening about law, language and what it takes to work across legal traditions.
