During 8 - 10 September 2016, the annual European Society of International Law (ESIL) conference will take place in Riga. It will bring together around 400 European senior legal scholars - lawyers, judges, academics and other experts in international law, as well as visitors from all over the world. At this year's conference in Oslo the representative or organisers of Latvian conference, Professor of the Riga Graduate School of Law and Constitutional Court Judge Ineta Ziemele also announced the conference topic: "How International Law Works in Times of Crisis".
Dr. Ziemele stated: “The Riga Conference is being prepared at a time when international law issues have become more topical than ever before. European leaders are daily facing events, solving of which touches upon a wide variety of aspects of international law, challenging the role of international law and legitimacy. Recent developments vividly illuminate different aspects of the international crisis - a threat to the territorial integrity, use of modern technologies, information war, thus creating new shapes of hybrid war, financial market difficulties of the world, European and national markets, an unprecedented flow of immigrants in Europe and the different approaches to address them.
Crisis in not a new phenomenon in the area of international law. Can the time of the crisis offer new solutions to global and European challenges and new legal frameworks? We will seek answers to these questions at the next year's conference together with colleagues from all over Europe. Organising of such an international law conference in Riga provides to Latvian legal science practitioners and policy makers a unique opportunity to take part in development of the European and global legal thought."
In preparation for the ESIL conference in Riga, Latvian legal experts and young researchers will have an opportunity to participate in the conference organising work and to contribute, inter alia, after applying for presentation of their research at one of the discussion sessions at the conference.
The ESIL annual conference in Riga will be organised by the Riga Graduate School of Law in cooperation with the Constitutional Court, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
