Prof. Ineta Ziemele, Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union and Professor at the Riga Graduate School of Law, has published a new scholarly article, "International Human Rights Treaties Binding on Latvia and the Constitution (Satversme): Harmony, Hierarchy and Control," in the Latvian legal journal Jurista Vārds.
In the article, Prof. Ziemele examines the constitutional principles governing the place of international human rights treaties binding on Latvia within the national legal system and their relationship with the Constitution (Satversme). The publication traces the development of these principles since the restoration of Latvia's independence and puts forward a proposal to improve the legal framework governing the parliamentary approval of international treaties.
The article contributes to the ongoing scholarly discussion on the relationship between the Satversme and international law, while reflecting the Riga Graduate School of Law's commitment to advancing constitutional scholarship and evidence-based legal policymaking.
