Legal scholar Dr. Viktorija Soņeca and Elizabete Fiļipoviča, a third-year student in the Bachelor’s programme “Law and Business” at Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL), have co-authored an article entitled “Digital Citizenship in the Age of AI”, published in the Latvian legal journal Jurista Vārds on 13 October 2026.
The article examines one of the most pressing legal challenges of the digital age: how to safeguard individual rights as artificial intelligence transforms the ways information is created, manipulated and disseminated.
The authors focus particularly on deepfakes and other AI-generated or manipulated content, exploring the implications for privacy, human dignity and reputation. Their analysis considers the European Union's legal framework, including the AI Act, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Digital Services Act (DSA), with particular attention to the responsibilities of different actors in the digital environment and the legal remedies available to individuals.
A central message of the publication is that digital citizenship extends beyond the ability to critically assess online information or recognise manipulated content. It also requires an understanding of individual rights, legal responsibilities and the mechanisms available to protect those rights.
RGSL values opportunities for students to engage in legal research and contribute to professional discourse during their studies. Elizabete Fiļipoviča's contribution to this publication highlights the importance of connecting academic learning with contemporary legal challenges and encouraging emerging legal professionals to participate in discussions shaping the future of law.
Congratulations to Dr. Viktorija Soņeca and Elizabete Fiļipoviča on their publication!
