RGSL Associate Professor Rūta Liepiņa, PhD, has been appointed Director of the Technology Law Master’s Programme, taking on a new leadership role in one of the most rapidly evolving fields of legal education.
Her appointment comes at a defining moment. Artificial intelligence, digital platforms and emerging technologies are reshaping economies, institutions and everyday life — and creating an urgent need for legal professionals who can understand, interpret and shape the rules governing this transformation.
As Director of the Technology Law Master’s Programme, Dr Liepiņa will bring her internationally recognised research expertise directly into the programme’s academic development. Her work sits at the frontier of AI regulation, EU digital law, platform governance, fundamental rights, consumer protection and computational approaches to law.
Dr Liepiņa’s international academic career includes positions at the ALMA-AI Research Institute, University of Bologna, and Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law. She holds a PhD in Law from the European University Institute, Florence and has conducted research on large language models, automated legal analysis, AI regulation and legal argumentation.
Her work has appeared in the journal of Artificial Intelligence and Law, The Cambridge Handbook of Generative AI and the Law, and leading international AI and law conferences. In 2025, her collaborative research received the Peter Jackson Paper Award for the Best Innovative Application Paper at ICAIL in Chicago.
