The Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) and the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence (BCME) have partnered to implement activities aimed at strengthening and developing the investigative journalism sector in Uzbekistan. These activities are part of the European Union project: “Improving Governance in Uzbekistan Inclusive Corruption Prevention”.
The objective of the project is to support anti-corruption reforms in Uzbekistan by implementing various activities that will strengthen the overall resilience of Uzbekistan’s public institutions, its regional and national governmental ecosystem, as well as its national anti-corruption strategy. The project activities will be implemented until the end of 2026.
The investigative journalism support activities are divided into 4 phases:
The first phase – general training on investigative journalism will provide knowledge and competencies on basic concepts of investigative journalism. The training is aimed at various target groups: journalists, press and communication officials, civil activists and bloggers, and students of journalism.
The second phase of the project will focus on further deepening the skills and knowledge on investigative journalism. This stage is specifically designed to provide individually tailored capacity-building activities and will be implemented through mentorships for specific media outlets and journalists.
The third phase of the project will be devoted to applying acquired knowledge from previous phases to practical work. Participants will be invited to take part in a competitive grant programme aimed at encouraging and enabling their professional efforts to apply gained capacity building skills to produce investigative articles.
During the final phase of the project, a peer-to-peer learning study visit to Latvia will be organised to participate in discussion-based workshops designed to foster knowledge exchange and share insights of the best European practices.
The project activities in Uzbekistan are implemented in cooperation with the United Nations, the German Cooperation for International Development (GIZ), the Slovenian civil society organisation Regional Dialogues, Transparency International - DELNA, the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence , and the Riga Graduate School of Law.
The project is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Commission. The lead partner in Latvia is the Central Finance and Contracting Agency.
