Riga, 22 June 2026 – Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) will host the 2nd Riga Private International Law Conference: “European Private International Law: An Era of Reforms”.. The conference will bring together scholars, researchers, and legal practitioners from across Europe and beyond to discuss current developments and future reforms in European private international law.
Held online via Zoom and conducted in English, the conference will provide a platform for academic exchange on some of the most pressing issues facing private international law today, including the modernization of EU legal instruments, cross-border dispute resolution, digitalization, labour mobility, sustainable markets, and international commercial relations.
The conference will open with welcoming remarks by A. Fillers, followed by four thematic sessions featuring presentations by experts from a range of jurisdictions and academic institutions.
The first session will focus on the Brussels Ibis Regulation, examining topics such as the autonomous EU concept of res judicata, the treatment of companies under the Brussels Ia Regulation, and the impact of digitalization on the core instruments of European private international law.
The second session will address the Rome I and Rome II Regulations, with discussions covering overriding mandatory provisions, cross-border tort claims, the role of private international law in fostering a unified European labour market, and the challenges posed by digital products and online marketing.
The afternoon sessions will broaden the discussion to other contemporary issues in private international law, including territoriality in digital relationships, sustainable markets, legal reforms in the Western Balkans, changes of circumstances in international commercial and investment contracts, the interaction of international arbitration conventions, anti-SLAPP considerations in EU private international law, and the recognition of trusts in international legal practice.
The conference aims to foster dialogue on the ongoing evolution of European private international law and to contribute to the broader discussion on how legal frameworks can respond effectively to technological innovation, economic integration, and increasing cross-border activity.
